Romcoms were never my comfort genre because I hated cheesy stuff. Its rare for me to watch a romcom that isn’t cringe-y with their cliches and whatnot. As much as possible, I steer clear. Most of the time its not the show or its actors, its simply preference.
Granted I do have 1-2 show of this genre in my top favorites but its not common for me to sing high praises for a romcom. So where am I going with this? I recently watched a show and 2 things happened.
I got butterflies in my stomach watching it
I got pissed that its a long way for the show to finish!
This show was out of my radar because I completely stopped looking for new dramas. I wanted to go on my own pace and didn’t want to add more to my queue. But social media happened. Seeing clips of it in Instagram and Twitter was my downfall. Haha!
What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim is an adaptation of Why Secretary Kim by Jung Kyung-yoon. A lot of adaptation happening recently – we all know that when something trends, we’re bound to see it for a while. So basically its about a narcissistic boss and his highly capable secretary. Screams romcom right there folks!
But let me tell you why I’m inlove with it and why you should watch it/add it to your queue.
Who’s Who?

At the heart of the show are Park Seo-joon and Park Min-young, who play the charismatic boss Lee Young-joon and his highly capable secretary Kim Mi-so, respectively. Although I had seen their individual work before, this pairing had me intrigued, and they haven’t disappointed so far. Park Seo-joon convincingly brings out his character’s humor, while Park Min-young’s sassy and confident portrayal adds to the fun. Together, they create an on-screen chemistry that’s hard to resist. Based on acting alone, they are doing a banging job.

I can only take a handful of cocky/overly confident characters. When portrayed right, you grow to love them. But done wrong, its cringe-fest. I only remember 2 cocky characters whom I love – Lee Gun and Joo Joong-won. I’m cool with PSJ’s portrayal of Lee Young-joon. He’s like inbetween Lee Gun’s wackiness and Joo Jong-won’s seriousness.

PMY, regardless of her characters, delivers. She’s sassy and confident. I fell inlove with her in Busted so I’m happy that you can actually see some of her personality in Kim Mi-so. Confident and capable yet fun at the same time. Also, her on-screen charisma is simply captivating.

My initial reaction about the pairing is warm and fuzzy. 2 episodes in and I already like them. I can’t wait to binge the show and see how the relationship shifts. Its obvious they like each other and that they’ll end up together but I’m anticipating the journey. I don’t want to spoil myself by reading the novel. I want to see how the relationship grows – whatever direction they chose to go.
I actually watched Jugglers (same-ish but not quite) and stopped halfway through. The leads were great but the moment that the romance was introduced, the pairing didn’t click for me. There are moments but as a whole, it wasn’t working for me.
The Story
With 2 episodes in, there’s not much to talk about indepth. I do know that there’s more to it than being a cutesy romcom. Peaking at EP 3&4, its not mearly a couple trying to figure their feelings. And TBH, I really don’t give a fuck about any 2nd lead – I’m more interested in getting to know LYJ and KMS. Or how his brother fits into his story. The 2nd lead is nonexistent in this show for me in terms of romance. LOL!
Another thing to mention that the drama does right is the comedy. They nailed it – so far. You know those sound effects in the Reply series? I love those and they also do it here without it being over the top. The comedy is not slapstick-y but not subtle either. This was one of my issue with Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo – the comedic style became irritating way early. The additional cast also adds a lot of spice to the show so I had a lot of laughs.
Bottom Line
Bottomline is that I’ll be watching this show but not until it ends though. I think you should too whether you like romcoms or not. I want to watch it now but I feel like it’ll ruin the experience for me. From what I’ve seen, its a fun show with a solid and capable cast. It definitely shouts romcom but there’s more to what’s shown. I also have a feeling that this couple will become a favorite of mine. Keeping my fingers crossed because I do like them.
Have you seen WWWSK? Or are you currently watching it? How is it? Tell me what you think.
